So, good news? Supernatural's back &, "his name's Castiel. He wears a trenchcoat."

Bad news? OH GOD, THIS EPISODE SUCKETH MIGHTILY. Not even the fact that it was offensive, how do I even begin to explain how much - ETA: apparently [livejournal.com profile] aesc knows exactly how much, and how - but that it was just bad. The character "insights" were forced, the villainness sexual and stupid - STOP WITH THE EVIL TEMPTRESS! - and every time a character opened their mouth to dictate / give advice I just wanted to smack them, because the messages you are sending? Wrong, wrong, wrong. And that doctor, jeez, how'd he get his medical license? Cereal box? That is not how you treat people who are mentally ill. That's not even how you treat your grocer.

AAGH. JUST, THIS SHOW MAKES ME SO FRUSTRATED SOMETIMES.

To be honest, I really shouldn't expect any better from the ones who gave us "...The Children Are Our Future", but I had somewhat high expectations. Guess they showed me!

Yeah, I found this episode to be very disturbing. If it tool place somewhere other than a mental hospital it might not have disturbed me so much, but I know people with serious mental illnesses, granted, all functional, but still. At least when House did an episode in a mental hospital the portrayal was more positive/realistic. And what the fuck is wrong with Dean? How is repressing everything going to help? Granted, he always repressed, but didn't he tell Sam at one point that after Jessica was killed that he couldn't stay that angry over the long haul without it burning him up? So why the about-face?

Bad writing. It can all be boiled down to bad writing. But as far as Dean repressing, and giving bad advice in regards to that - I can actually believe that. That's always been his coping mechanism, even when it hasn't worked (think John's death), and he's always been uncomfortable with Sam's overshare tendencies. To be honest, I think this particular piece of advice was more about Dean than Sam. It was, "You're angry, but I'm going to tell you to push it down and never let it out, because I don't want to have to talk about why you're angry." It's not about what's best for Sam; it's what causes Dean the least amount of pain, and allows him to pretend that their relationship is like it always was, with him leading and Sam following. Whatever allows him to get out of bed in the morning, every morning, over and over. (Like, Dean can drop little nasty hints about Sam's role in the coming apocalypse, but when Sam tries to bring it up, Dean completely shuts down.)

Yeah I can buy that. Getting anything out of Dean has always been like pulling teeth, and he's never liked to think about Sam being different, way back to "Nightmare." And Sam's bad choices notwithstanding, he's his own person. Yeah, I think he needs Dean, but Dean needs him too. It's not the same dynamic they had when they were younger and Dean took care of him all the time, hasn't been for awhile.
