vanitashaze: Arthur during the last kick. (In with the new and out with the ducks /)
I AM DONE WITH HIGH SCHOOL!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!

In celebration, a meme:

Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general.

Just one question, please, but it can (and perhaps should) have sub-parts.

Question can be as wacky as you want. Ask me about tv shows, characters, fanfic in general, fandom issues/meta, anything about any of my stories specifically. Whatever you want.
vanitashaze: Arthur during the last kick. (great balls of fire!)
I get through my entire life without sneezing and sniffling like some of my more unfortunate compatriots, and then this spring - BAM! I'm hacking, sneezing, coughing, and just generally dripping my way through my IB exams. (Can we get a resounding "yuck" for... well, pretty much every part of that last sentence?) So, to cheer me up, here's a meme.

Name any story I've written, and any character in them, canon or OC. I'll tell you three things about that character which I didn't put in the story.
vanitashaze: Arthur during the last kick. (girl if you're a seascape i'll be a boat)
1. Insta!rec: Hanna Is Not a Boy's Name. Magnificently cute supernatural webcomic with fun characters, great art, an incredibly sweet burgeoning friendship between the title character and the narrator (who is a KIND-HEARTED ZOMBIE, OMG), and storylines that are not only amusing, but intriguing.

2. Bought Richard Siken's Crush. I'll let you all know how awesome it is after my heart starts beating again. (And, yeah. It's that good.)

3. Voice meme! Here's how it works: Comment with as many questions as you want, on pretty much any subject. And I'll answer it in a voice recording! Fun for you, and fun for me, 'cause I get to hear myself talk, which is a SURREAL experience. ♥ And now, answers!

For [profile] stubbel:

Question #1: How Did You Get Into Fandom?

Question #2: What Fandom Do You Love the Most?
vanitashaze: Arthur during the last kick. (what at the heart of your engine's rage?)
When you see this, post a poem on your journal.

Surfaces serve
their own purposes,
strive to remain
constant (all lives
want that). There is
a skin, not just on
peaches but on oceans
(note the telltale
slough of foam on beaches).
Sometimes it's loose,
as in the case
of cats: you feel how a
second life slides
under it. Sometimes it
fits. Take glass.
Sometimes it outlasts
its underside. Take reefs.
The private lives of surfaces
are innocent, not devious.
Take the one-dimensional
belief of enamel in itself,
the furious autonomy
of luster (crush a pearl -
it's powder), the whole
curious seamlessness
of how we're each surrounded
and what it doesn't teach.

1. I love being part of the inner-workings of nonprofits. They're just so fascinating, that combination of altruism and selfishness, caring and depersonalization, the things you want to do brought up short by the things you must. There's something immensely satisfying in seeing the sin-cracks in the saintly plaster. (Though if you don't like gossip, they are not the place for you. Forget lesbian separatist communes: if you want women in your life, to be totally surrounded by them, go into the nonprofit sector! Nary a man you will see, except for when the Big Bosses (the Board, dun dun dun) meet.)

I think I've mentioned before how depersonalized human services get - out of necessity; like doctors, charity-workers think of their "clients" as numbers or moments in time, no sort of grand continuum - but even so, you'd be surprised how much humanity that can be found there. People smile, laugh, make mistakes, make jokes, chat, cry, rage. Even a list of names in a file registry evokes. Hours of re-filing and crouching in crowded hallways is, I think, no one's idea of a good time, least of not mine, but I feel a bit better for a world that apparently contains a Ms. Little John, a Mr. Outlaw, a Yohn, an Orf, an Ogle, an Ours, a Pearline, a Moneymaker, a Muddiman, and as the topper on the proverbial cake, a Billy Justice (who I actually met) and Mr. McFail.

2. Of note: this is hardly a guarantee I'll write anything, because I think it'll be a miracle if I finish everything I'm supposed to within the alloted time. However - you never know. So prompt away! If nothing else, I will be happy to shriek, squeal, and discuss your prompt.

The "You Should Write..." Meme!

I'll say this: I hated taking Creative Writing as a class. Absolutely hated it, down to my bones, down to things further down than bones, because everyone there was so slow and for many of them, just plain not good at writing. (Yes, I'm rather vain, I know, I'm working on it.) But the one thing I do miss is constructive criticism. Now, for instance, I'm having what I perceive as a change in style, these sort of shifts that come along periodically, like shedding a skin and finding the pattern underneath slightly different. Not really noticeable, not yet, but it's bugging the hell out of me. I feel like: on the one hand, my plot and characterization are maturing, but on the other hand, the style in which they're writ is becoming more generic, less experimental, less imagery-based. Like, SUBTLETIES? If I'd had the idea for that now, I don't think it would have been written. Even my thoughts feel less original, but more tired repetitions of the same three hundred images that have been bouncing around the universe for years and years and years.

All of this, of course, sucks small round things, because I like having imagery. Like being kinda edgy, kinda out there.

If I were still taking that class? I'd have people to talk about it. Now, though: not so much. So the existence of this meme makes me very happy, and I hope you - the great and lovely f-list - do respond, honestly, because I want to get better; or fix what's broken; or even have you tell me I'm out of my fucking mind, there's nothing wrong.

THE ANONYMOUS WRITING FEEDBACK MEME

From [livejournal.com profile] sheryden:

Leave comment on this post, and I'll give you a band. You put your ten favorite songs by that band on your LJ and challenge others to do the same. Don't worry, I'll make it one you know.

I got the lovely Vienna Teng.

i. Recessional
In the terminal she sleeps on my shoulder / hair falling forward, mouth all askew
As fluorescent announcements beat their wings overhead / "Passengers missing, we're looking for you."

ii. Undone [Live at the San Francisco Independent]
Like sudden daylight there you were / took all I had just not to swerve
And slow instead of yield / but then your light was gone

iii. No Gringo
Oh Arizona's burning / they say the fence turned 'round
Now the razor wire keeps us out

iv. Radio
Oh the flash / then the silence
Shouldn't there be screaming praying crying / oh anything at all

v. Pontchartrain
Who drew the line? / Who drew the line between you and me?
Who drew the line / that everyone sees?

vi. Watershed
While you were building your empires / I was still sleeping / I was still sleeping
While you were setting your woods afire / I was still dreaming / I was still dreaming

vii. Daughter
You're talking about things / interesting just slightly
And things that matter too much / to say any way but lightly

viii. Decade and One
I thought of anger and adulation / And the taste of dreams realized
And the waste dreams realized / leave behind

ix. In Another Life
And we feel it like the shiver / of a passing train
That other life / deep underground

x. Love Turns 40
But something keeps you faithful / when all else in you turns and runs
Love turns forty / and the morning comes

1. This vid has been rocking my world so much, you have no idea. [livejournal.com profile] charmax's "Unnatural Selection", BSG/Terminator, robots and Darwinism and gorgeous editing and enough symbolism to choke on. Plus, a really great background track! Watch it, even if you don't know the fandoms - I don't - because you will not be disappointed.

2. From [livejournal.com profile] ladyanne525, a meme! Comment and....

1. I’ll respond with something random about you (probably an inside joke of some kind).
2. I’ll challenge you to do/try something.
3. I’ll pick a color that I associate with you.
4. I’ll tell you something I like about you.
5. I’ll tell you what animal you remind me of.
6. I’ll ask you something I’ve always wanted to ask you.
7. If I do this for you, you must post this on your journal.

1.

2. You know how when you're really, really tired, things start to kind of... make sense in a really nonsensical way? Well, I've been listening to Sufjan Steven's "Seven Swans" for the past hour and a half, and only now do I realize that he's singing "the Lord", and not "the Lorne".

1. And ah, the saga of the second dog continues with a great mess of crap on the rug, crap on the floor, and crate-training advice from my English teacher (was weird). What really kills me is that Tess is such an absolute darling, and you can see that it just kills her when she does something wrong. Only, she doesn't know a lot of things are wrong. And so, there is a lot of wrong stuff going on, and damn near nobody's happy.

2. Poe's "Haunted" seems like a very John Sheppardian song. I don't know. Give it a listen. That whole album is pretty brilliant, anyway.

3. You know, it's quite funny. I haven't watched the show since the second season or even given it much thought, lately; in fact, I'm definite in my certainty that Heroes has jumped the shark. Possibly several. Because, wow, bad. But looking back through what I've written - what I continue to write - it seems I'm mostly a Heroes writer. And when I say "mostly", I mean predominately in a big way. And it was my first real fandom, too, the one that actually got me writing and speculating and spinning their lives in my head. I suppose I just can't let go of that, even though these days, the canon bears no resemblance to those characters I loved. (In fact, I've gone so far in my denial as to pretty much create an alternate canon in my head - something that, if you look closely, strings all my stories together into some weird commune future.) And now there's the [livejournal.com profile] heroes_exchange, and I'm left thinking, didn't I used to really like these characters?

I don't know, you guys. It's weird to have such a big part of me belong to a fandom I don't even like anymore.

4. Meme time!

Anyway, let's start the new year off right; The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.

More than one question is allowed. I'll answer happily :)

Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you!

The Fandom Appreciation Meme: My Thread

On a related note: TGIF, my friends, TGIF. I am so ready for the weekend, even if Hell Week follows directly after. Which, you know, it does.

1. Poetry recitation today. I'd forgotten how much I love voice work. Not just singing, but speaking, hearing your voice fill the room just as it fills your throat; the indentations of it, crests and waves. The way it breaks on the last note, just a little, and how crowd-speaking is not that different from music. At the end there is a moment, always: a vacuum space that lingers as the words roar away, that sudden and dizzying lack of gravity. I who whisper in my sleep, I who sing to empty streets - I see the shock in their faces and I think, don't you know the power that throbs beneath the skin?

2.
cozyup!
You know you want to.

From [livejournal.com profile] molly_commas (I'm starting to notice a pattern here):

RULES:

1. Compose a list of your top ten sexiest famous women.
2. Collect one picture of each woman on your list.
3. Post them in your journal/blog.
4. Tag 3 people to do the same.

Apparently, I have pretty conventional taste, a fondness for certain characters the actresses play more than others, and a thing for hips & strong cheekbones. Yayz.
