How do you feel about the original? (Cat Power's voice is more my thing than Hank Williams's, it's true.)

I much, much prefer the Cat Power version. The twangy country thing Williams has got going on is not my thing, and I love the edge Cat Power puts into all of her songs; in the case of "Ramblin' Woman", she really draws out the soul of the song, that combination of wanderlust, pride, realism, and a touch of wistfulness. All of her songs are like this, sort of cold with a little bit of vulnerability, and I love them. They sound like 3AM in the bellies of big cities; they sound like the truth of dreams. And to be honest, I could wax on about them for much longer than this.

By the way - watched the Jo vid (God's Country). The first time I saw it, I'll admit to being kind of meh, okay, and?, but something made me watch it again, and then again, and with every repetition I got that much closer to heartbreak. Oh, Jo. To me, this vid illustrates one of the main tragedies of her death and her storyline in general: the sheer potential she had as a character, which was mostly left unfulfilled.

Speaking of amazing Supernatural vids, have you seen lithiumdoll's Glittering Cloud (Locusts)? It is this breathtaking, horrifying portrayal of the experience of demonic hosts, furious and eerie, and flawlessly cut. & definitely puts Meg Marsters into context. We had an earlier discussion about the Witnesses episode, and I think I mentioned it felt kind of gratuitously violent and unfair - in terms of what the Hunters did vs. the degree of punishment - but this totally flips my position upside down. One of those, Oh God, how did I not see that moments. The vid does what the episode didn't, and shows the why to that screaming, inarticulate rage the Witnesses carried. I left a longer review on the vidder's sticky page, but suffice to say that I was completely bowled over.

It's not my favorite Cat Power song - I do like what you have to say about her music, probably better than the songs themselves!

Yes to how "God's Country" illustrates the heartbreak of that unfufilled promise, wah.

lithiumdoll is in my circle, so I did watch her video! Possibly my favorite insight from your comment is how the frame narrative situates the whole story. And thuviaptarth had some more thoughts I liked a lot, too:

In SPN--and most SPN vids--the possessed are a presence that are an absence; they're right there, but we don't see them, we just see the demons. And you make the invisible obvious; there are clips I've seen a hundred times, and they never looked like this, along with the clips I've never seen in a vid before. I was particularly struck by the use of Jesse's mother (IMDB says her name is Julia? I don't remember hearing it), Meg, and Sam and Dean killing Ruby (this may be the only time I have ever seen that scene used where it didn't jerk me out of the vid into my intense hatred of that scene). And the use of the Winchesters--but especially Sam--as a contrast to the unwilling victims of possession is just spot-on.
