fanmix: transit [heroes, young meredith]

1. If anyone has a few minutes to spare, I would love them forever if they could give their input for this. It's for a good cause, people!

2. First Heroes fanmix, and it's for a character that gets twenty minutes of screentime for the entire two seasons.

...But she is sort of awesome, yes?

[Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova] Drown Out
You were burned out
And had to stop before all hell broke
And finally took its toll
And save our souls were playing dead
And mine for gold in a heart of lead
And turn around and save yourself
We found our way and blocked it out

[Sufjan Stevens ft. Rosie Thomas] The One I Love
This one goes out to the one I love
This one goes out to the one I left behind
A simple thought to occupy my mind
This one goes out to the one I love
Fire, Fire
Fire, Fire

[Jose Gonzales] Teardrop
Love, love is a verb
Love is a doing word
Fearless on my breath
Gentle impulsion
Shakes me, makes me lighter
Fearless on my breath
...
Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath
Stumbling a little
Stumbling a little

[Kings of Convenience] Surprise Ice
When past sometimes takes you with soft hands,
Forcelessly pulls you to your chair.
Hides you away from these half days,
Sunless at the end of the year.
The air is like a knife cutting through you,
A room in the house is always warm.
Stretched out on the bathroom floor, thinking,
Of fair days your future may hold.
Love comes like surprise on the water,
Love comes like surprise ice at dawn.

[Holly Brook] Like Blood, Like Honey
You wanna catch your breath, you wanna get out
But as you surface, you don't really know how
How to live upon the solid ground
Well, sometimes it's just easier to let yourself drown
Love is thick
Like blood, like honey
You cannot spell it out, there are no words
Mrs. Johnson never taught me those verbs
On how to give myself and how to receive
It is something that's inside of you and me

Tie your hair and gently fall from grace

Wipe the shadow from your eyes
Rest your daughter while your mother cries
You could have let him fly

Calm down, calm down

You don't see it anymore
The child's eyes are vacant now
The lights are just a glare

[Heather Nova] Sugar
On the Vermont Transit Bus I leaned my arm into a little chink of sun, going somewhere older than I was, strapped into something tight, keeping me small. I dug into you like rock climbing: too scared of coming down, too scared of going up, too scared of rockface. I should've split my sides or spilled my guts or hit you or something, but I was good.
Oh, when the cock crows, when the morning comes where will I go?
When the cock crows, when the love is gone where will I go?
And when you got me pregnant I stopped the party and I stopped the typewriter and I stopped your dumb ball game in the red barn and I stopped your father and bled instead. And I felt the lie - something sticky on the inside; a bitter wind in my throat, stopped me wanting, in my stomach, in my head

Someday we may see a
Woman king, bloodshot eye
Thumb down and starting to weep

[Damien Rice] Rootless Tree
What I want from you is empty your head
They say be true, don't stay in your bed
We do what we need to be free
And it leans on me, like a rootless tree...

And all we've been through
I said leave it, leave it, leave it
There's nothing in you

Oh, Mexico
It sounds so sweet with the sun sinking low
Moon's so bright like to light up the night
Make everything all right
Baby's hungry and the money's all gone
The folks back home don't want to talk on the phone
She gets a long letter, sends back a postcard; times are hard
Oh, down in Mexico
I never been so I don't really know

Bonus: This song isn't on the fanmix, because I felt it didn't quite mesh with the sound of it, but I had to include it somehow. It is such the perfect Meredith-song. And, of course, it's Vienna Teng. You cannot go wrong with that combination.

[Vienna Teng] Shasta (Carrie's Song)
So far, so good
You're coming to the bend at the end of the road
You put a hand to the belly that's foreign more
With every day like an oversize load
And you're thinking about clouds the color of fire
And the scent of an orange peel
The way Mt. Shasta explodes into windshield view
And your hands steady on the wheel
...
And you're thinking about how someone died that day
The you that was so carefully planned
But then again maybe this life is like a sleeping mountain
Waking up to shape the land

I think this awesome! *downloads* I read somewhere that we might see her again on the next season, actually. Either way, I really like the idea and songs you picked.

[identity profile] vanitashaze.livejournal.com 2008-06-28 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, that'd be great! Hopefully the writers'll be a little more sympathetic towards her this time 'round.

amazing music. taking a couple of songs. thanks!!

You're welcome!

I love your choice of "Shasta". I can just picture Meredith thinking, Do I want this baby? I could just... and then changing her mind.

[identity profile] vanitashaze.livejournal.com 2008-06-28 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
That was the song that started the mix, actually (which is ironic, considering it didn't actually make it onto it). I was listening to Waking Hour right between Heroes reruns and thought, omg, Meredith!

[identity profile] metatarsus.livejournal.com 2008-06-27 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I love this!! So nice to see fanmixes for different characters <3 and the songs you picked are perfect. SO MUCH LOVE for Jose Gonzalez's cover of 'Teardrop'!

[identity profile] vanitashaze.livejournal.com 2008-06-28 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
My favorite is still the original, but Jose Gonzales is still pretty cool. I absolutely adore his cover of "Crosses".

This is great! I loved Meredith. (I made a Nathan/Meredith mix which had even less screentime). The music is lovely as well.

[identity profile] vanitashaze.livejournal.com 2008-06-28 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, who needs screentime? That's what fandom is for. ;)

Oh my gosh, so many great artists! Can't wait to give this a listen!

Glad you liked!

Is she awesome? Hell yes! Although Heroes has a pattern of "bad" mothers who can't/won't manage to get it together for their kids, and who often exist in order to make the fathers-who(-eventually)-do look better. The show's overall take on motherhood is pretty off-putting. I wish more fans would pay attention to Meredith, in a sympathetic context; whenever I finally get around to the Heroes section of my Awesome Women list, Meredith won't be on it, but that's because there's only one Meredith story I know and like. Your artwork is beautiful! "Sugar" is perfect for Meredith, and I didn't know about this cover of "The One I Love." Now I realize that Kim Richey's beautiful cover of Cake's "Mexico" totally reminds me of Meredith (and her relationship with Nathan). Have you heard it?

[identity profile] vanitashaze.livejournal.com 2008-06-28 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
...who often exist in order to make the fathers-who(-eventually)-do look better.

Really? I've always thought that the fathers on Heroes were pretty reprehensible. There are good mothers on the show - Jessicaniki (sort of), Mrs. Bennett - but the flipside of this is that the good mothers on the show are only mothers. That's their role in life: being defined by their children and husband (or ex).

Have you heard it? I have not, actually. Is this a cover of a cover or is it different than Taylor's song?

Bad father, good father, bad mother

[identity profile] ticketsonmyself.livejournal.com 2008-06-28 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
The point of having Nathan (throughout much of season 1) and Meredith as deadbeat parents was to make Noah look better. A lot of the fathers are reprehensible - and their failures and fates are coded in classist and racist ways - yet the narrative provided justification for Nathan (with his self-sacrificing decision at the end of season 1, and he even manages to survive – no coincidence that he’s a white guy) and Noah’s actions as fathers-of-a-daughter (the same daughter, even!) in ways it hasn't for, say, Jessicaniki or Angela. From coffeeandink, plus a few of my comments on coffeeandink’s entries:

In S1, Claire's plot was self-discovery, leading to a questioning of the family order--explicitly the patriarchal order, in which her father was controlling the entire family and everyone in it in unacceptably coercive ways, disguising it behind a mask of benevolence and affection--a mask that was all the more effective for being true. She eventually forgave and rejoined her father, but only after establishing that she was herself an actor and not simply an instrument of others' power, that she had a right to plan her own future and create her own identity, and that her father's unilateral control not only of herself but of the entire family, particularly of her mother, was unacceptable.

I am not surprised Noah is backsliding with Sandra and with Claire, given his lifetime of manipulation and secrecy. However, the ways in which the show is depicting this backslide and Claire's necessary rebellion are gendered and also, let's be blunt, creepy. In two episodes, Claire's rebellion has been reconfigured as not primarily about self-discovery, but about romance; the threat to the family and the father is not the external Company, or Claire's powers or will, but the possibility of Claire's romance with another man. The daughter's sexual maturity is the death of the father. And the father strikes back with extreme and inappropriate control of the daughter's sexuality, aided and supported by the mother. West was Claire's stalker in Eps 1-3; Noah is Claire's stalker in Ep 4 [and onwards]. In both cases, Claire is the object of interest not because of what she is herself, but because of the role she plays in the men's stories. In the space of two episodes, Claire's major conflict with her father has shifted from being his control of her behavior and personality to his control of her sexuality and his past malfeasance in the life of her new boyfriend. The conflict is no longer about who she wants to be; it's just about who she wants to fuck. [Or rather, as vaznetti comments, who gets to decide who Claire fucks.]

In 2x04, it is possible to read him as paralleled with Matt, whose use of his adopted daughter Molly for his own personal and professional ends is clearly set up as selfish and mistaken. But I am not so sure the show means it as a parallel; it seems more like a compare and contrast. Noah isn't wrong about the dangers of Claire's maturity: the show offers him an objective correlation of his patriarchal desire for domination and control. "The father dies when the daughter matures" is a description of the passage of time; "The father dies because the daughter matures" is one of the fears at the heart of the patriarchy and patriarchal control of female sexuality.

The effect of his self-sacrifice and resurrection is to wipe the slate clean: Noah reaches for the duct tape, but Bob uses it; Noah abducts West, but is willing to pass his daughter along to him; Noah kidnaps Elle, but in reaction to Bob kidnapping Claire, and Noah's mind-wiping of Sandra -- clearly referenced by Claire, with a significant shot of Sandra -- is wiped away by Bob's alleged and more sinister mind-wiping of Elle's happy memories. [2x09] acknowledges and erases Noah's crimes at the same time.

Meanwhile, Kaito has to die and stay dead for *his* crimes to be forgiven.

[Meanwhile, Niki has to erase herself from her son’s life in order to protect him from the danger she actively poses to him - a peril demonstrated by D.L.’s death, which was gratuitous in ways that highlight the gendered mode of punishment. She’s tainted even before she becomes Patient Zero for the virus. This is not at all the same as how Noah tells Claire in the season 2 finale that she’s right and he has to leave their family in order to keep them all safe, because the show has set up the storyline so that it is Claire’s fault in the first place that Noah died and then had to return to the Company.] Niki goes out of control, gets her husband killed, and has an expiatory death in her fireman husband’s place. [If I say any more here it’ll involve spoilers for season 3.]

Claire is deprived of the agency she was claiming as the person to reveal her powers, as she’d been arguing for nearly all season long. [Given the fact that her blood can literally bring back the dead, any government would immediately try to kidnap her and keep her in a lab for the rest of her life, as Sandra pointed out - but it’s almost the only independent decision Claire would have gotten to attempt all season. (Incidentally, I wished Sandra had brought up the adverse physical effects she's suffered due to all those memory wipes, which would have lent weight to whatever side of the argument she chose: Sandra's already paid a huge price for living with and caring about Claire, and public revelation of Claire's superpower might well bring down worse consequences. But, y’know, the show would rather downplay the physical aspect of Noah’s abuse at this point, in the spirit of wiping the slate clean.) And of course, Nathan independently reached the same conclusion Claire does and got to carry it out, even if the shooting cut off his actual point. It's like the show stole the words out of Claire's mouth and put them in Nathan's; I have the bad feeling it's going to keep doing that.]

I don’t think the problem is that Kring et. al. deliberately set out to minimize women and people of color. I think that the assumption that the Important People are white men is so deeply ingrained in the writing staff that they just keep making plot decisions that reinforce it.

If a white man’s plot doesn’t work, jettison the wife and have him interact more with other men: Matt Parkman or Nathan Petrelli? If a woman’s plot doesn’t work, kill her off. If a man of color’s plot does or doesn’t work, kill him off. [Sure, not all of the women and characters of color are written off by the end of season 2, but it’s a pattern, with no sign of net improvement. Someone else noted that the show effectively killed D.L. three times, which is really gratuitous – at the end of season 1; in season 2 when Niki, alone, parts from Micah; in the flashback when we actually see his death. And that’s just one example among many.]

Kim Richey covers a different song. I'll upload it later.

Re: Bad father, good father, bad mother

[identity profile] ticketsonmyself.livejournal.com 2008-06-28 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
One more thing about "bad mothers" in Heroes: as Wikipedia reminds me, Meredith tells Claire that Nathan is giving them $50,000, with Claire entitled to half; however, Meredith actually made a deal with Nathan for $100,000. Also, there's the matter of Meredith setting her house on fire when Noah and Claude came for her, with Meredith leaving baby Claire to burn despite not even knowing Claire could regenerate. All of that is clearly meant to make Mr. Bennet look better in season 1, like the "good father." sam_storyteller wrote a story in which the Haitian (and do I ever hate that the show's Magical Negro remains unnamed) erases all Meredith's memories of Claire on the basis that Meredith didn't deserve to be a mother. I really dislike the implicit misogyny of both the show's treatment of Meredith (and its other mothers) and many fans' attitudes regarding the same.

Go to it! I'd cheer for that.

I checked my bookmarks and there are four stories involving Meredith that I like: one about Claire, one about Nathan and Meredith with a focus on Nathan's POV, one about parents in Heroes, and one about Nathan's familial and romantic relationships. If you write something, I think you can do better, though.

Oh, thank you! Though I'm not so sure about that, really. Even though it's turning sort of epic (for me, at least): many words of Meredith.
